The Athlete Development Wheel: Working Together as Coach and Athlete

To ensure that athletes get the most out of the Athlete Development Wheel, the systematic work should take place in collaboration between the coach and the athlete. It is the athlete who should be in the driver's seat, but it is important that you as a coach help the athlete with necessary prioritizations and familiarize yourself with any issues that may arise.

Practical Experience with the Development Wheel

"I asked the athlete to review the components of the Development Wheel and answer all the reflection questions before our conversation. I had prepared for the main focus in the coming period to be optimizing nutrition related to training, as well as improving the quality of certain parts of the training work.

However, it turned out that the athlete had, for a long time, been struggling to handle pressure in connection with both training and competition. I was completely unaware of this and had not noticed anything in the athlete’s behavior. If it hadn’t been for the fact that the Development Wheel gave us space to talk about a broader, concrete whole, I am certain this would not have come up in the conversation."**
